The Return of the Living Dead Title Remake
The title sequence for 80’s classic slasher film The Return of the Living Dead just got a massive upgrade to their title sequence. I wanted these titles to reflect the grotesque and and over the top comical nature of the film. Without changing the original sound track and compromising the integrity of the film I leaned into a 80s comic style with punches of red and a grainy old fashion tv treatment.

Limited to the same time frame of the original sequence and the music, I had to think outside of the box in order to ensure a 2+ minute sequence was dynamic and attention grabbing. My first instinct was to make the color scheme kitschy and bright. I wanted to dramatize the ridiculousness of this film.
However, I ended up pivoting. The over the top colors ended up distracting the viewer and taking away from the messaging of the original film. In return, I traded the saturated colors for the pop of red on black and white. The goal was to rely on film imagery and treatment to provide context of the films satirical nature.
